A good software demo answers one question for the viewer: “will this fix my problem?” If it does that in a way they believe, they click. This lesson is a structure you can reuse for any tool.
The five beats
- Hook. Open on the problem, in the viewer's words, not the product's name. “I used to spend every Friday afternoon chasing invoices.”
- Problem. Show the pain for a moment: the messy spreadsheet, the ten open tabs, the copy and paste. People recognise their own mess.
- Show it working. One real workflow, start to finish, on a real screen. Resist touring every feature; the viewer wants to see their job get done.
- Result. What changed for you: the time saved, the thing finished, the mess gone. Only what you really got.
- Next step. How to try it: “The link's in my bio. There's a free plan, and my code gets you a discount on the first month.” Say what it costs, so nobody clicks expecting something else.
Hooks that work for software
- “I stopped doing this by hand.”
- “The tool I open every morning before email.”
- “You're probably still doing this the slow way.”
- “I tried every tool for this. This is the one I kept.” (Only if you did.)
- “Here's my whole setup for this, start to finish.”
Record it well
- Record the screen at full resolution, then zoom in on the part that matters. A small window of text nobody can read loses people.
- Make the cursor bigger and slow down when you click something important.
- Turn off notifications and close anything private: email, messages, other customers' data. Use a demo account if your real data is someone else's.
- Add captions. Many people watch with the sound off.
- Your face in a corner helps: people trust a person more than a cursor.
Short or long
Short vertical videos work for one workflow and one result. Longer videos on YouTube work for a full walkthrough, with chapters so people can jump to their part. Either way, the label goes first.
The label
Show “Ad” on screen at the start, say it, put it first in the caption or title, and switch on the platform's paid-partnership tool. It costs you nothing with the right audience, and they're the ones who sign up.
